This on top of crushing capitalism (aka people struggling to survive on the daily) are in my opinion the true antagonists of change and/or acceptance. It’s the classic strategy of ‘Keep them oppressed, keep them occupied. By the time they realize something is wrong it’s too late.’
Agreed. Modern life is so consuming that people don't get a chance to consider where we're headed. I think it's also the enormity of what acceptance would imply. For many/most, it would mean realizing that death will come for you (and your loved ones) sooner than our culture leads us to expect, and it's not really logistically possible for a significant % to defy that. For example, NY state's land base can feed 4M people. NY's population is 20M (8M in the city, 12M in the suburbs/countryside). Being willing to dramatically change one's lifestyle wouldn't be enough. There just isn't much to be done, even *before* it's "too late".
